Take a look what we got for the award categories this year!!

Best Narrative: PRIZE: $100 + Craft Award

Narrative, or fiction, films are made up of many elements, storytelling, sound, acting, editing, theory, etc. The best narrative film category will take all of these elements of cinema in consideration. The best narrative film will not only display great storytelling but also show advanced camera and technical skills.

Best Non-Fiction: PRIZE: $100 + Craft Award

Non-fiction, or documentary, films are made to document some aspect of reality. Whether the film is documenting one characters life or being made to record a historical event or social movement, the different aspects of non-fiction are vast. The best non-fiction film will be judged on subject, storytelling, and the technical aspects of filmmaking.

Best Experimental: PRIZE: $100 + Craft Award

Experimental film can explore many historical, philosophical, social, (etc) theories, through the art of film and video. Typically experimental films push the limits of the medium and create an experience of the visual arts. The best experimental film will display a clear thought process behind every aspect of the production, while also using the medium to explore the visual arts.

Best Animation: PRIZE: $100 + Craft Award

The animated film category includes, but is not limited to digital (computer) animation, hand-drawn animation, stop-motion, clay animation, and rotoscope animation. The best animation will be judged both on story and technique of animation.

Best Editing: PRIZE: $100 + Craft Award

Film editing sets cinema apart from other art forms that preceded it, such as photography, theater, and painting. The editing process is the art of assembling shots, in a nearly invisible way, in order to form the film’s story as a coherent whole. The best editing can come from a fiction, non-fiction, experimental, or animated film and should not only help the story telling of the film but also display technical advances in the editing field.

Best Cinematography: PRIZE: $100 + Craft Award

The camera is a cinematographer’s paint and canvas. The way each image is composed should support the story and the characters in the film. The best cinematography award will go the film the demonstrations innovative composition and forward-thinking camera knowledge.

Best Undergraduate Film: PRIZE: $200 + Craft Award

From freshman to seniors, and from experimental to animation all submitted undergraduate films will be considered for this award. This award will be given to the undergraduate filmmaker who displays the highest ability of storytelling through the medium of film or video.

Best Graduate Film: PRIZE: $200 + Craft Award

Every type of film, whether narrative, documentary, or experimental, should reveal the filmmaker’s voice. This award will go to the graduate student who not only completes a technically advanced film but also reveals their voice as a filmmaker through their film.

New categories

Due to the varying submission numbers in several categories, we have introduced three changes to the award categories:

Due to the high volume of music videos we received, we are excited to announce the formation of a best music video category.

Our animation and experimental categories have been blended into one category: best animation/experimental.

We also blended best visual screenplay for the animation and experimental categories into one category: best visual screenplay animation/experimental.

Thank you to everybody who participated! We look forward to seeing everyone at the Diamond Screen Festival in The Reel on May 6 and May 7.
